Japanese-Inspired Retrofit

gloss was commissioned by Konishi Gaffney Architects to renovate a 1960s bungalow in Edinburgh, originally designed by LDN in 1964. The couple, retiring from the Far East, initially planned to demolish the house for a new build but opted to retain and extend the existing structure to prioritise environmental sustainability.

The design embraces the bungalow’s Japanese modernist aesthetic, creating a seamless connection with the surrounding gardens. By opening up the roof and removing partition walls, gloss created a spacious open-plan living area with front-to-back views. A rear extension added three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a tatami room, all linked by a corridor with garden views. The home features modern, sustainable elements, including triple glazing, a ground source heat pump, and solar panels, ensuring both comfort and environmental performance.
